Help with the STAR model

USING the "STAR" model is often used in job interviews. It gives you clarity, reduces tension, stops overwhelm and increases your sense of certainty. This is about describing a "Situation or Task", "Action taken" and "Results."

Be certain to select examples where YOUR role in the process was clearly visible.... If you need help with this then make sure you secure a clear contract brief for the job you are interviewing then I can help you look for similar 'Situations' from your most recent contract.

Its better to go into your interview armed with two or three solid STARS than to go in 'blank' hoping for the best because that will put you at a serious disadvantage.

OR If you are a DIY person..

here is a sample template you can use. Unfortunately every POSITION BRIEF is unique BUT this template should give you some idea as to what is meant by STAR.

Describe the Situation.
"Our corporate [x] function needed to find a way to handle the [y process] more quickly. We were already good at [procedure z] for [doing A] and [doing B], but our [Y] process was too [resouce R] consuming and not effective enough. "

Describe the Action taken
" I met individually with [impacted parties] to [research issue]. We determined that [x, y and z] were the top three determinants. I arranged a pilot program where we [did S], but [had a Y] and [a C]"

Describe the Results
"We were able to drop [cost] for [process Y] from [old cost] to [reduced cost] and after [x] months we saw a [x%] decline in [-ve effect] in [area of interest]."

Leverage your STRENGTHS not recoil in hopium or weakness...
BUT remember others are making sure they are better at this than you and so its important that you get practiced at doing this for every single interview because each job brief will be unique.

If you are still uncertain, struggling to match your STAR's with your experiences
